What you'll learn

To be eligible for a stenography course, you generally need to have passed 10+2 or an equivalent from a recognized board. While some vocational or ITI courses may have a Class 10 requirement, most professional stenography training or government job eligibility requires a high school diploma. You should also possess basic computer knowledge and good proficiency in English, Hindi, or another regional language, especially in shorthand and typing.

Educational requirements

  • Class 12 or equivalent: This is the most common and often mandatory educational qualification for most professional and government-related stenography roles.
  • Class 10: Some vocational programs, like certain ITI courses, might only require a Class 10 certificate for admission.

Other qualifications and skills

  • Language proficiency: You must have good proficiency in the language you will be using, which often includes proficiency in shorthand.
  • Computer knowledge: Basic computer literacy is essential, including proficiency with office tools like MS Word.
  • Typing speed: A minimum typing speed of 30–40 words per minute is often required, though higher speeds are often preferred and may be necessary for specific jobs.
  • Shorthand speed: A shorthand speed of 80–100 words per minute is a standard requirement for many positions.
